A story is so much more than Plot and Things That Happen.
A story is first and foremost about character and WHY the events of the plot matter to them.
This fun and highly informative creative writing workshop will seek to dispel common creative writing myths and help you to understand not only WHY you need to know your story’s emotional arc, but HOW to go about achieving this and weaving emotional significance into every step of your story.
Having a solid emotional arc is essential for so many reasons: (1) It keeps readers hooked because they want to find out WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, (2) It makes YOU a better writer because you will know your characters intimately, making it less likely that you will lose steam or come up against the dreaded writers block, and (3) It means that your story will flow organically and naturally from start to finish, leading to a seamless and deeply satisfying end product.
We will start by thoroughly exploring what emotional arc means and why your story needs an emotional core. We will then guide you through the experience of building your story’s emotional arc, and you will leave the workshop with a toolbox of tips, tricks, and exercises that you will be able to use again whenever you need.
This workshop is perfect for writers of all levels of experience, and it may be especially useful for those of you who are taking on NaNoWriMo! Come ready with a notebook, pen, computer, whatever you prefer to write with — and a willingness to play and explore! Bring a work-in-progress you’d like to develop, or use this workshop to discover and build an entirely new project.
Enter the online meeting room from 2pm for a 2:15ish start. The meetup will be conducted on Zoom. Any questions about Zoom, just ask!
There are no refunds available for this event, but if something happens on the day please get in touch, we may be able to give you a place on a different workshop at a later date.
See you then!!
